Diagnostic tests

Audiometry

Manually recorded pure-tone audiometry is available and is performed in accordance with the British Society of Audiology procedures.

A hearing test is usually administered to a person by having them sit in a soundproof booth with a set of headphones over their ears which is connected to an audiometer. The audiometer produces tones at specific frequencies and set levels to each ear independently. The audiologist plots the loudness (in decibels) on an audiogram. The person having their hearing tested will convey that they have heard the tone by pressing a button. As the test progresses, the audiologist plots points on a graph where the frequency is on the x-axis and the loudness on the y-axis. Once each frequency of normal hearing ability is tested and plotted the points are joined by a line so that one can see at a glance the frequencies a person is not hearing normally and to what degree the hearing loss is.

Tympanometry Testing

Tympanometry is an examination used to test the mobility of the eardrum and the condition of the bones within the middle ear by creating variations of air pressure in the ear canal.

This is an objective test of middle-ear function. It is not a hearing test, but rather a measure of energy transmission through the middle ear. The test should not be used to assess the sensitivity of hearing and the results of this test should always be viewed in conjunction with pure tone audiometry. This is a very quick procedure and has minimal discomfort.

This is carried out using the British Society of Audiology's procedure for best practice, as published in the British Journal of Audiology.

Oto-acoustic emissions

This is an objective measure of cochlear function and a reliable indicator of inner-ear function.

Oto-acoustic emissions are clinically important because they are the basis of a simple, non-invasive, test for hearing defects in newborn babies and in children who are too young to cooperate in conventional hearing tests.
