Balance investigations
Electronystagmography is available at the Chaucer Hospital if requested by a General Practitioner or more often an ear, nose and throat consultant. It is a diagnostic test to record involuntary movements of the eye caused by a condition known as nystagmus and can be used to determine whether somebody's dizziness or vertigo is due to a balance or nerve disorder.

The test takes about 90 minutes. Electrodes are placed on the patients head to record voluntary and involuntary eye movements. The patient has to focus their eyes in a number of positions whilst recordings are taken. Caloric testing will also be performed. Caloric testing involves air being blown down on to the ear drum. It makes the patient feel a little dizzy but this feeling is quite brief and means that we can record the rate at which each ear reacts to the stimulation.
