Hearing awareness

The Hearing Care Centre raises awareness of hearing loss issues and helps you look after your hearing.

"Our environment is loud and while noise levels at work may be more regulated, there are still some people who lose their hearing as a result of their occupation.

Those working in the entertainment and leisure industries are just some of those who are at risk, including DJs, bar staff, broadcasters and fitness instructors. Our campaign is designed to highlight these noise risks and to encourage people to take sensible steps to protect their hearing for the benefit of themselves and their families."

Did you know in the UK there are: -

  • 8,945,000 deaf and hard of hearing people
  • 2,474,000 deaf and hard of hearing people aged 16-60
  • 6,471,000 deaf and hard of hearing people over 60
  • 108,000 people with severe to profound deafness aged 16-60
  • 580,000 people with severe to profound deafness aged over 60

Hearing awareness days

Our mobile hearing screening unit travels around South-East Kent during the summer offering free hearing checks and advice on hearing loss and hearing aids.

Special projects

We support a wide range of projects concerned with the deaf and hard of hearing both in the UK and overseas. These projects include sponsorship of a hearing dog, a charity project to fit profoundly deaf children in Romania with digital hearing aids and a range of surveys to raise awareness of issues relating to hearing loss.

The Hearing Awareness Campaign has 5 key objectives: -

  1. Raise awareness of the risks of hearing damage, particularly risks associated with music and other types of social noise.
  2. Offer sensible advice on how you can avoid hearing damage by limiting exposure and use of hearing protection and noise cancelling headsets etc.
  3. Encourage a sensible attitude to noise risks. Enjoyment of noise and other social activity without the risk of hearing damage.
  4. Help people identify when they have the early signs of hearing loss so they can take steps to protect their hearing before it is too late.
  5. Raise awareness of the day to day problems faced by the
    hearing impaired.
